Our law firm represents a proposed class of academics and researchers who are challenging Academia.edu’s alleged practice of using their identities to sell its premium subscription.
According to the lawsuit, Academia.edu sends emails and displays advertisements to non-paying users to encourage them to pay for a Premium membership. Often, these advertisements feature the name of another person who Academia.edu thinks a non-paying user might know or be interested in, a type of social engineering designed to encourage people to pay for the service.
If your identity was used in one of those emails or advertisements, you may have a claim. Read the lawsuit here.
What do the advertisements look like?
According to the complaint, the types of advertisements being challenged look like the following:

If you’ve received an email like this, or someone has been sent an email or displayed an advertisement featuring your name, then you may have a claim if you reside in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, South Dakota, or Washington.
