We’re hiring for a detail-oriented, resourceful paralegal who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment. You’ll play a central role in all phases of litigation, from case intake and investigation through discovery, motion practice, and trial. As a member of a small but growing team, you’ll work closely with attorneys and have a direct impact on every case. This is a very team-oriented and collaborative environment with an emphasis on healthy and human interactions.
Responsibilities
Litigation Support & Court Filings
- Handle legal filings in federal and state courts, including California state courts and federal courts.
- Cite-check, proofread, and Bluebook legal documents, including handling document formatting and preparing tables of contents and tables of authorities.
- Assist with drafting administrative motions, declarations, stipulations, pro hac vice attorney admissions, and collecting and preparing exhibits.
- Work with attorneys to confirm compliance with local rules, standing orders, and administrative requirements for all court filings, including regarding courtesy copies.
- Preparing shell documents for discovery requests and responses.
Case Management
- Manage case files, litigation calendars, and deadlines across multiple simultaneous matters. The firm uses Clio Manage for calendar management.
- Coordinate with vendors including process servers, court reporters, videographers, and printing services for hearing binders and deposition exhibits.
Client Communication & Intake
- Handle intake calls and initial communications with potential new clients.
- Communicate with existing clients via phone and email, keeping them informed on case developments
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree and/or ABA-approved Paralegal Certificate.
- 2+ years of experience supporting civil litigation, preferably in a plaintiffs’ firm.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Meticulous attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases and deadlines simultaneously.
- Working knowledge of federal and California state court rules and procedures.
- Proficiency with e-filing systems such as CM/ECF and state court portals.
- Command of Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Google Workspace.
- Comfort working both independently and collaboratively in a remote environment.
Preferred
- Experience with e-discovery platforms (e.g., DISCO).
- Proficiency with legal research tools such as Westlaw.
- Knowledge of Bluebook citation format.
- Experience with macOS.
- Proficiency in Spanish or another language spoken by the firm’s clients is a plus.
- Interest in or commitment to social justice, civil rights, or public interest work.
Work Arrangement
Although this is a fully remote position to start, there is a preference for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay Area. In-person meetings and travel may be required from time to time, including for court hearings, depositions, conferences, or other business. The firm may eventually open a workspace in San Francisco with a flexible policy for in-person attendance.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $65,000-80,000, commensurate with experience. The position also includes a discretionary performance-based bonus.
